A specific program is designed for each individual based on his/her needs. A land evaluation is required prior to the first warm water visit. The basic treatment techniques used on land may be used in aquatic therapy; however, the properties of water such as buoyancy, increased resistance and neutral warmth help create a more conducive environment to allow the child to achieve their goals.
Some of the benefits of aquatic therapy for individuals with physical disabilities include:
Physical Benefits 1. Physical endurance increases 2. Best aerobic-exercise allowing muscles to work without strain or gravity 3. Reinforcement of acquired motor skills, which improves balance and coordination 4. Strengthening muscles which may be immobilized by braces and wheelchairs 5. The warmth of the water allows for greater relaxation
Psychological Benefits 1. Success at any level can improve self-confidence and self-esteem 2. There is a decreased fear of falling while in the water 3. Feeling of freedom from the constraints of wheelchairs, braces and crutches 4. Provides a feeling of grace and ease and a channel for independence 5. The water is fun and relaxing
